Abu Dhabi holds IRENA CEO election


On April 3, the fifth session of the preparatory commission of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the election of its CEO were held in the capital of the UAE, Abu Dhabi.

During the meeting, delegates were acquainted with the report of the chairman of the administrative committee of IRENA, the interim rules of procedure for the Assembly and the Council, multilingualism, internal rules, the staffing fund, internships and staff training, financial matters, the establishment of committees, transfer of assets and responsibilities by the preparatory commission to the agency and recommendations on transition measures.

In addition to this, Adnan Amin, and. about. CEO of IRENA, presented his annual report on the implementation of the work program and budget for 2010.

Then, the session delegates agreed to the recommendation of the Agency Assembly to adopt the preliminary program of action and budget for 2011. In particular, this year, the IRENA core budget of US $ 13.26 million will be distributed between three subprograms: Knowledge Management and Technical Cooperation, Political Consulting Services and Capacity Building and Innovation and Technology.

The closed election of the IRENA CEO ended in favor of Adnan Amin, who received 76 votes, while his opponent, Pedro Marin, received 36 votes. Thus, Amin is now the current IRENA CEO.

Adnan Amin, Kenyan diplomat, took over and. about. CEO of IRENA November 1, 2010. Until the 1980s, Amin worked on policy development issues at the Institute for the Study of Development, created by the British University of Sussex and the World Bank. After that, he joined the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), where he performed various duties and functions. In 1997, Amin received the position of Director of UNEP in New York. Prior to joining IRENA, Amin was Director of the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination.

The official delegation of the Republic of Belarus also took part in the first session of the IRENA Assembly, which was held in Abu Dhabi on April 4 and 5. The Belarusian delegation was led by Sergey Aleinik, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs. It also included representatives from the Department of Energy Efficiency and the National Academy of Sciences.

According to the press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, the country is actively involved in the process of creating a new organization. The head of the Belarusian delegation outlined in his speech the country's approaches to the prospects for the development of renewable energy and the priority areas of the new organization. In addition to participating in the session, Sergey Aleinik met with the leadership of the UAE Foreign Ministry and discussed pressing issues of bilateral cooperation.
