Crime rate drops significantly in Dubai in 2011

According to Colonel Ahmed bin Galita, director of the Dubai Police Crime Department, the number of crimes such as theft, rape, sodomy and murder decreased by 31.7% in the emirate in 2010 compared to 2009.

The decrease in the number of violations of the law was due to the efforts of the department to combat crime, which its employees undertook in 2008-2009. According to Mr. Galita, this year, for the first time since the formation of the department and thanks to his work, the crime rate decreased by 7.7%.

Speaking during the Rouh Al Qanoon (Spirit of the Law) program, Colonel Galita noted that according to the analysis of the crimes committed, most of them were not planned in advance. In some cases, victims of crime themselves provoked them.

For example, the owner of a new model of cell phone left him on a table in a cafe, retiring to the toilet. When she returned, she found that there was no telephone on the table. A man of Asian ethnicity was attacked and killed after he left the currency exchange office, receiving 720 thousand dirhams in cash there (US $ 196,721). Police suspect that the killer was a mechanic who was heading to a nearby car shop for spare parts and saw an Asian man recounting a large sum of money on the street.

Mr. Galita said that Dubai police has stepped up patrols in some areas of the emirate, which can be called "vulnerable to crime."

These include: Nayef and Grand Market in Al Refa'ah, Al Satwa, Global Village in Ras Al Khour. Today, thanks to the special attention of police officers to these problem areas, they managed to prevent 134 conflicts in Nayef, 24 crimes are being investigated, eight people were arrested in Satwa, 21 people were arrested in Global Village, 160 cars were confiscated.

The colonel appeals to all residents of Dubai with a request to inform about suspicious persons or actions on a toll-free telephone line: 800 600 600, and promises that informants will not be held accountable.
